How to Determine What Size Keg Cooler You’ll Need

Turbo Air TBD-3SD Stainless Steel Direct Draw Keg Cooler | 3 Keg Capacity

When it comes to commercial beer dispensing, kegs are not one size fits all. There are several things to note when determining what size Keg Cooler your establishment will require.

  • Availability of each size of keg will vary by brand of beer and location.
  • Talk to your beer supplier to find out which brands are available for immediate pick-up, and which need to be special ordered, and in which size keg those particular brands are available.
  • Approximate Keg Diameters:
    • 1/6 Keg= 9-18″
    • 1/4 Slim Keg= 12″
    • 1/4 Standard Keg= 16-17″
    • 1/2 Keg= 16-17″
  • Once you determine what size kegs you will need, then you should shop for the proper size Keg Cooler.
  • Keg Box Capacities:
    • True 1-Keg Capacity will hold….  1 x Standard or 1/2 Keg; or combination of 2 x 1/6 Keg and 1 x 1/4 Slim Keg; or combination of 4 x 1/6 Kegs
    • True 2-Keg Capacity will hold…. 2 x Standard or 1/2 Keg; or combination of 2 x Standard or 1/2 Kegs and 2 x 1/6 Kegs
    • True 3-Keg Capacity will hold… 3 x Standard or 1/2 Keg; or combination of 3 x Standard or 1/2 Kegs and 2 x 1/6 Kegs

How a Kegger Changed the Course of History

1773– The Boston Tea Party was started because of a beer shortage. When the British Government told the colonists to just drink tea, the colonists were inflamed! Rumor had it there was more beer coming on a British trade ship, so the colonists planned to steal the ships cargo. Upon opening the crates, it was discovered that the shipment was tea- not beer. This caused massive rioting and acts of debauchery in which all the tea was thrown into the Boston Harbor.

1914– War breaks loose in Europe after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. At a kegger in Serbia, the Archduke declared the superiority of German beer. Angered by this statement, Gavrilo Princip, a lover of fine Stout, assassinated him, thus beginning World War I. Germany entered the war to prove that they produced the best quality beer. Yes my friends, WWI started from an argument about which country makes the best beer.

1972–  Watergate had nothing to do with Nixon trying to get the dirt on his rivals. Oh contrare! In actuality, the  Scandal had more to do with Nixon’s cronies stealing kegs of Pabst Blue Ribbon, than stealing confidential documents. They would have gotten away with it, too had they just shared the loot with Deep Throat.

1980– The Soviet Union Hockey Team of 1980 lost “The Miracle on Ice” because of a wild keg party the night before the big game.

2006– After a wild keg party, Mel Gibson does something stupid- well actually a lot of somethings. And as they say… “The rest is history”

Keg Coolers are Energy Star Products

Energy Star

Everyone is trying to save money, while at the same time working to improve our world. That’s why many manufacturers are working hard to ensure that their products are energy efficient. ENERGY STAR labeled commercial refrigerators and freezers are more energy efficient because they are designed with components such as ECM evaporator and condenser fan motors, hot gas anti-sweat heaters, or high-efficiency compressors, which will significantly reduce energy consumption and utility bills. Compared to standard models, ENERGY STAR labeled commercial refrigerators and freezers can lead to energy savings of as much as 35 percent with a 1.3 year payback. How to Pour a Perfect Draft Beer

Unlike men, not all beer is created equal. There are hundreds of different kinds of draft beers that you can serve at your bar or restaurant. With this in mind, it is important to know how to properly pour a draft of beer. Courtesy of the American Bartenders School, here are a few tips for how to pour the perfect draft:

  1. Use a Clean Beer Glass… Leftover residue will distort the taste of the beer and affect carbonation.
  2. 45 Degree Angle… Hold the Beer Glass at a 45 degree angle so the beer will hit the middle of the glass, allowing the beer to flow down to the bottom of the glass. This will guarantee the proper head. When the glass is 2/3 full of beer, straighten the glass out and hold it upright.
  3. Foam… Target for 1/2 inch of foam, by increasing the distance between the beer spout and the glass. Also, make sure to keep the faucet opened completely to avoid too much foam.
  4. Temperature…Never serve beer in a warm glass. There are a variety of Glass Chillers that will keep your mugs at the perfect chilled temperature.

  5. Then There was Guinness… Guinness experts suggest using a two-part pour method for its notorious thick and nitrogenous stout. To do this, pour the beer about 2/3 of the way up the glass and wait 30 seconds to help the nitrogen bubbles in the beer settle.

Beer Bread Recipe Made with Draft Beer

A well-poured mug of beer is not just for drinking (although it sure does taste delicious!). There are a variety of recipes that can be made with beer. From Beer Dip, to Beer Bread and even Chili, beer adds a bit of a kick to many recipes. Here’s one of my favorite recipes for Beer Bread. Keep in mind this can also be made with bottled beer or Alcohol-Free Beer if you prefer.

Swiss Beer Bread (Makes 1 loaf)

  • 4 ounces Swiss cheese
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 12 oz Draft Beer (or bottled or Alcohol-Free Beer)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  1. Divide cheese in half. Cut half of cheese into 1/4-inch cubes. Shred remaining cheese.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and pepper. Stir beer into dry ingredients just until moistened. Fold in cheese.
  3. Transfer to a greased 8-in. x 4-in. loaf pan. Drizzle with butter.
  4. Bake at 375° for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan to a wire rack.

Keg Cooler Buying Guide

If you are serving alcohol at your establishment, then you definitely need a Keg Cooler. Check out our website and you’ll find dozens of Keg Coolers, each with a different numbers of taps, made out of  a variety of material, and with different options. This post will help you determine the best Keg Cooler  for your business.

Where will you store the keg? If you own an establishment with an outdoor bar area or if you have less than 6 beers on tap, we suggest a Direct Draw Keg Cooler. This type of Keg Cooler allows you to dispense beer at the bar from a unit located under the counter. If your establishment will offer patrons dozens of different kinds of beer, then you will need to install a Walk-In Cooler to dispense the beer.

What size Keg Cooler will I need? This depends on what size kegs you will be using. There are 3 common types of kegs in the US: Half Barrel, Quarter Barrel, and Mini Keg. The easiest way to see if the keg will fit in your Keg Cooler is to measure the keg itself. A Half-Barrel Keg has a diameter of  16 -17” and will fit in just about every Commercial Keg Cooler available. Double and Triple Keg Coolers will hold 2 an 3 kegs respectively.

Beverage-Air DD50C-1-B Black Vinyl Direct Draw Keg Cooler | 2 Keg Capacity (Club Type)

What is a Club Top Keg Cooler? These are really neat! Not only does the unit consist of a Keg dispensing system, it also includes an easy to reach-in storage area beneath a slide top where you can store chilled glasses, and beverages.

Does the CO2 cartridge come with the Keg Cooler? No. This needs to be purchased separately from your beer distributor.

What is a Keg Cooler?

I think we can both agree that if a customer receives a beer at room temperature, they’re not going to be too happy.  While you can easily store beer bottles and cans in a standard refrigerator, it’s not that easy when it comes to serving up chilled drafts of beer. Make sure your

True TDD-4-S Stainless Steel Direct Draw Keg Cooler | 4 Keg Capacity

customers beers are always ice cold by using a Keg Cooler.

A Keg Cooler, better known as a Kegerator or Beer Cooler is a draft beer dispensing device that dispenses beer that was stored in a keg. While a keg can be tapped without a Keg Cooler, the major benefit of using one, is it keeps the beer chilled and fresh while providing the signature foamy head which is ubiquitously equated with a well tapped draft beer.

Regardless of shape or size, all Kegerators essentially have the same basic components:

  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) cylinder
  • Carbon dioxide regulator
  • Coupler
  • Tubing (special carbon dioxide tubing as well as line for the beer)
  • Keg
  • Faucet
  • Refrigerator
